Agri Committee in brief
The Green Hand followed with attention the Agri Committee Meetings which took place at the European Parliament last Wednesday and Thursday tackling topics such as Research and Innovation, the European Competitiveness Fund, the new Multiannual Financial Framework for 2028-2034 and the new Budget Expenditure Tracking and Performance Framework, in short, the future of European Agriculture.
The discussions currently taking place are particularly important as they will determine the rules of the game for the coming years in terms of EU funding. Being at the table of the negotiations and understanding the ins and outs is therefore primordial for any stakeholder of the European agricultural sector.
Among other points, European Agriculture competitiveness has been discussed under several aspects:
1) The proposed 20% cut of the funds allocated to farmers representing a 30% cut in real terms and reducing financial support to farmers;
2) Trade Agreements between the European Union and other parts of the world implying a competition that can seem unfair;
3) The CAP renationalization that could lead to distortion and competition between farmers from different Member States;
4) Targeted support, especially for SMEs, small famers and young famers and better prices to make farming more economically attractive;
5) Simplification to lessen farmers’ administrative burdens;
6) Digitalization and targeted investments in water resilience to prepare farmers for the upcoming climate change challenges.
